Hello All, Ihave a 1978 Ford Stepside that I ant to install a 460 engine in. When I do this will the Torque converter be ok to use out of my 400 and will the car exhaust manifolds work in the truck? I can change the exhaust if I have to im just curious if the car manifolds will work. Thanks for your replies. Randy form Missouri
If its 4wd, you'll need some mounts from L & L or a Van with a 460. I have no idea on the exhaust. You'll need brackets for the accessories as well. L & L makes those as well.
If its 2wd, its a pretty simple swap, as it was a factory option. You'll need engine mounts and accessory brackets.
I'm sure the car manifolds won't work nicely (you can make anything work. . .), get yourself a set of truck manifolds, or a descent set of headers while you swap. About the converter. . .I know the bellhousing pattern is the same, but there is supposed to be difference in depth between the 460 and 400. I'm sure someone else with more knowledge of this swap will chime in
EDIT: I don't even know why I try and post, you guys are just too quick
The 460 has a thicker flywheel, for manual tranny applications only. (different imbalance)
OK, thanks for clearing that up, I though it was for all trannies The car manifolds sit to far down and out to clear the frame rail on the passenger side. They almost look like suedo cast iron headers. Truck manifolds exhuast outlet is right under the log itself. You can make the car ones work, but you may need to trim the frame some.
