Brian, you jinxed me man. I'm losing coolant, but not on the ground. It's not leaking on the motor and cooking off, and it's not showing up in the oil. Two guesses what I think it is..time's up, you guessed it, intake gaskets!!
I'm gonna investigate a little deeper this weekend, but I'm adding a gallon of water a week, so I've gotta do something fast. I'm gonna take pictures along the way, so I can keep track of my progress, and see how clean it really is inside with 170,000mi.
I'm really starting to think about looking for another engine, to play with a little and have waiting. I mean, if for some reason it isn't caught in time, you are gonna spend it anyway. Might be cheaper doing it now. Not in a rush.
I'll be at yours and Brian's mileage in about a year. Mine is a 2000.
Sorry Travlnman. You and Brian got me worried a bit. I know the gasket issue isn't automatic, it just seems that it is still something we have to think about. Something I've never had to think about. Gaskets, gaskets, gaskets.
Sounds like it.
How do you have the time to do it yourself !?!?
It was well worth the $400 for me to have it done.
I suspect you'll find a healthy does of carbon inside your intake. They bead blasted mine while it was off. But, I think yours is plastic, correct?
I still drive the 2000 a lot and it runs good.
550 miles Sat/Sun (Southaven, Mississippi for son's baseball torunament)
about 250 miles today (To Scottsboro and then back to Bham for work)
"brisk pace" = 18 mpg. I was happy.
Keep us posted.
edit to add: cat converter still cracked a rattles a little. I will reset the CEL and eventually the light will come back on (catalyst efficiency code). I don't fret it - it runs fine......
I went over it again with a fine toothed comb yesterday while changing oil and tranny fluid. I can find no evidence of leaks on the engine, or on the ground. I used my bro-in-law's machine shop to pull it inside and get under it real good, and none hit the floor after a 10 mile drive. I can use our company car while I work on it, so I'll probably do it myself, a little each evening that I'm home. Work is insanely busy right now, but it's gotta be done. As I stated before, I'll document as much as I can, good and bad, and post any info and pics that seem relevant. Yes, the intake is plastic, but I bet the lower has some carbon, as well as the IMRC. It won't be this week when I start, but it should be in the next couple of weeks. I don't want to wait too long, and end up like Brian did, only with worse results.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do anything yet. I'm running on God's graces right now. I still add water every week. I hope to address it within the next two weeks. Keep your fingers crossed. Hey, BTW, can you go to the Dragon the last week in July?? Whichever end of the week has the best weather.
Whew...I pushed my luck and now you too!! Be sure to hold your mouth just right when you crank it!
I will be at The Dragon the last weekend of July. Alex and I leave early Friday morn July 29, and will be returning home on Sunday.
We are staying here: www.dealsgap.com
We will be hauling the CBR 1000 up in the back of the 2000 (you know, the one with the FIXED gasket)
We'll talk via landline. Call me sometime.
BTW, I'll post a new pic in my gallery from two weekends ago.
Just for you!!
What a guy. Yep, manster, still going, kinda like that bunny on t.v. . Looks like a cool place. There's a place in Robbinsville that has a bike garage with every room, that's cool!
I've gotta get serious about fixing the truck though. My wife's redecorating the kitchen, and I keep getting sucked in, and using all my time. Work is absolutely packed right now, as I am typing this from Arkansas. I'll keep you posted, wish me luck!
Hey Brian, great pics, you really know how to hurt a guy. Seriously though, looks like I may go up earlier in the week, but it's not set in stone yet, just wanna avoid as much traffic as possible. By the looks of those pics, I won't be following you up the Dragon, just wait at the end and I'll be along shortly. About the truck, I checked all the plugs, yesterday morning after letting it sit overnight. All the plugs are clean as a whistle, I thought I would have a bunch of crud on the offending cylinder(s) because I have burnt a lot of water in the last month. They were also dry, with no smell of coolant on them if that makes any sense. Talk some sense into me, cause now I'm second guessing myself, maybe a high pressure leak only at temp and speed, that's harder than normal to find. There was a light , and I mean light white residue, that I usually associate with running lean, but it was on more than one cylinder, and on both sides.
I'm only running water now, 'cause coolant is too expensive. My plan is to take it down some time starting this coming weekend. I hope I'm not wasting my time.
Well, it's started. I hope to put it back together tomorrow. One piece of advice, if you try this yourself, take it to your mechanic, and pay him whatever he charges to get the very center/back bolt out of the upper intake. Then drive it home, and finish it yourself. On my 2002, with the plastic upper, there is no room between the cowl, and the upper intake to reach this bolt.It is equally difficult from either side. After much fussing,(no cussing), and soaking wet with sweat, I was able to get it out.I started about 10 a.m., and quit about 5 p.m. The majority of my time was spent on that little bolt. BTW, it is the one with the little stud on it to hold the spark plug wire loom.Keep ya posted!!!!!1
