I have an 1988 f150 with the 5.0 and a fresh aod transmission. I also have the code 19 axels which i believe are the 8.8 open diff. Will my truck be able to handle a 6 inch lift with 35's or should i add gears, and what gears should i add. Also more importantly will my transmission hold up wiht the added strain of tires. WHat gear ratio will do these trucks have stock.
with tires that big, I'd get the 4.10 rear gears. It'll hold together, you might not be quite as fast as you used to be though. Towing would also be affected accordingly.
I am currently running 33s w/ the same rear you have....actually everything is the same except for the Trans.....I have a c6. My truck is a dog....lolol. When I'm on the trails....I'm on the brakes all day long......even at idle the truck moves too fast. When I wear out my 33s.....I'm going to put on either 34s or 35s and I will at some point re-gear to 4.56. I'm also going to rebuild my C6 and install a low gear set that will lower my 1st gear ratio by 10%.
HTH
The 4.56 would be a great choice for a 5.0L as it like to live on rpms. Look into transplanting a limited slip rearend or locker of your choice, it will give you the most bang for the buck if you're gonna change gears anyway.
jwtc36,
Think about a reduction box aft of the t-case to crawl and still have highway "economy" or at least something like it.
