Any suggestions on what to do with the manual "3 on the tree" on the 272 in my '55 f-100? I'd like to have it on the floor or go to an automatic, but without having to change the engine as well... Are there any bolt-ons for the auto or how do I get the shifter on the floor with the current tranny?
Don`t know of any auto swaps unless you can find an old outomatic to fit your engine which could be hard. The easiest maybe an after market floor shifter (JC Whitney)or a 4 speed transmission to swap. The 4 speed is not a great transmission for light duty 1/2 ton with granny low 1 st gear. I would perfer your 3 on the tree.
Thanks Fomoko1.... I think you're right, I'll stick to the three speed on the column...
Here's another question for ya:
Where do I get the right engine colour for the 272... July is coming fast and I'm gathering everything I need for the 3 week blitz....
Do you need to know the correct colour or that you know the correct colour and want to find out where to buy it? My 57 F350 with a 272 V8 has a light green engine colour but don`t know if that is correct for a 55.
My PAW catalog shows a B&M manual shifter that fits 1949-78 Fords and Mercs. My brother used to have a 56 Ford Sedan Delivery that he put some sort of 3 spd shifter into but I don't know what kind.Maybe check out the swap meet coming up in Saskatoon as they always seem to have them there.
Depending on your vehicle condition I would not spoil it by choping an ugly hole in the floor to put a floor shifter in. I have seen too many other wise good vehicles butchered by some one cutting a big hole in the wrong spot and making it even bigger and uglier to stick a floor shift in. I hate to see floors, doors and dashes cut up. If you do a neat job with the proper planning and it can be undone after that may not be so bad. By using a saw or plasma and saving the peice for repairing it later (and not using a torch! )would be the way to do it.
These trucks have transmission tunnel covers. So to go back to original all he has to do is find another one.
Good point but care to guess how many good ones are around? There was only one per truck when new. Between hackers and rust and the crushers there can not be very left in good shape I bet unless you happen to have a secret supply. No one that I know of repops them. My 56 transmission was cut up so I was lucky to have one good one in my parts truck, that is the only good one that I know of out of the 3 parts trucks I have, either rusted or missing. Remember that they haven`t made these parts for almost 50 years. Kinda of reminds you of the buffalo that used to roam every where until some one took care of that. Nothing is forever so take care of these old truck parts we still have some to enjoy. Now I will put my soap box away and go back in my corner.
There are more parts reproduced for the earlier years but not much is reproduced for the 57 & up. I would not like to have look for much for my 69 F100, luckly I have one in good shape and not too much more is needed. Would like a NOS 67/69 grill and body chrome but probably couldn`t afford it if I did find them.
On my 54 I was forced to go to the Hurst floor shift. Taking flat head out putting 292 and 3 speed in) You have to cut a little of the floor out as well as the removable cover corner. If your careful it can hardly be noticed under the boot. Infact you have to lift the boot to see the hole. so don't worry it's a acceptable trade off.
