Timing Excitement
Well, I got out the light last night and decided to try and get my timing happening. Here's what I found out. The tab on the right side isn't where the timing is on an '80 motor. Mine fell on the timing gear cover marks. Another thing. I must have had it at 18 or 20 BTDC because it was off the scale 
No wonder I had hesitation when I stomped it. That is way too far. I set it at 8. My vacuum guage has scales on it to tell what is wrong, and it said my timing was retarded. If it is at 8 wouldn't seem better to ignore that? I can only figure that with a different cam and the 4bbl some of the stuff will be off. What is the carb vacuum numbers you guys with holley 390s are reading? I was at 16" Hg at idle. It says that it should be 18 and up.
While I am at it, what secondary spring are you using. I have the purple one in, which is middle of the pack.
