What gear drive?

Im looking for parts to rebuild my 300 in the 82. I've seen comp cams has aluminum with steel cam gear timing sets. I'd like to find one that is steel for both gears. Does melling make one? I would imagine that I could probably just pick up a stock timing set at my local parts store, that is steel. What have you guys used that have rebuilt your 300's? Thanks Fred

i went to advance auto and picked up a set of steel cam gears for around $35. i asked for a set from a 77 f-150 with a 300 since i am EFI and use those ****ty plastic gears.

The Comp Cams fine tooth gears I just got were supposed to be steel/aluminum, but they are coarse tooth steel/steel. Gotta get those sent back. I'm a little leary about using steel/steel with a knock sensor only a few inches away.

Would there be any harm in just removing the knock sensor? I was thinking that there shouldn't be any concern if the engine is running fine. Isn't it more of just a safety item for those that do not know when there engine is running fine?

Sometimes the PCM is programmed to use a limp mode if it detects a sensor gone. I don't know if the 300 is like this or not, but if it is the computer would retard the timing and add fuel under the assumption that it needs to take steps to avoid detontation.
