I am driving a 1971 Ford F250 with power brakes . When I step on the brakes I can hear a vaccum leak from down on the floor where the rod from the brake pedal is . Is there a way to stop this or does this mean the vaccum pot is bad ?

It's dangerous. I replace the carb on my 67 a few years ago and the new carb did not have a vacuum port on the back for the PCV. I cut my brake booster vacuum line (intake to booster), installed a "Y" and hooked in my PCV. This changed the vacuum to the booster and the brakes were almost non-powered. It was difficult to stop like that and with a load, I could not make and emergency stop. Bad idea to drive this way.

Dangerous idea because when it suddenly fails, you will find it almost impossible to get enough leverage to lock the brakes up, especially with a load. Mine blew a leak and still with part of it working it was a tough stop with a load of wood.
I believe the main difference between manual and power brakes is the angle and pivot action of the pedal that allows you to apply more pressure and a longer travel.
FWIW: I put a F-350 master cyl/booster combo, for disc brakes, on my F-100 from Advance Auto for <$100 (I have four wheel drums). It works great. I am sure it will be bolt in for a F-250, same as my F-100. It comes with adapters if you want to eliminate the Ford adapters and just use reg. 3/16 line connectors.
