I bought a 1956 F-100 and was told by the guy I bought it from that he was told by the guy he bought it from that it had a 312 in it. The VIN indicated that the truck originally came out with a 272. Is there a way for one to determine what motor is actually in the truck? The numbers on the block (on the driver's side by the freeze plugs) are 6015-A, what do these mean? Any help would be much appreciated.
The 6015 is the Ford base part number for all engine blocks. All blocks will have this as the middle of their complete part number. The A means that block was the first version of that particular design. The more important letters/numbers are the prefix to the 6015. Go to John Mummert's web site http://www.ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm and look over the Y-block ID information.
If I recall, finding out for sure if you have a 312 requires looking at the rear end of the crankshaft and/or the main bearing caps. Somebody else that knows that issue better will be along to give you the details.
The date code is a good clue to determine if the engine is possibly a 312. The date code will look like 9 B 16 for example. 9 being the year, B the month, 16 the day of the month. Month codes range from A for Jan to M for Dec, I was not used. This example would be 1959 Feb 16. The date code is stamped not cast on the part indicating the date of manufacture. I have seen them on the flat top of the timing cover after cleaning off dirt ,grime and paint.
The 312 came out in 1956 and was last produced in 1960. Look for ECZ6015 casting number on the block. In the latter years (58-60) it was in the Mercury cars and painted green. But the only sure way is to drop the oil pan and check the bearing caps for the casting number ECZ as these were only used in the 312s.
Thanks for the help guys. After a lot of searching and crawling around the motor I did find some letters on the front of the motor that were concluded to be ECG which indicates that it is indeed a 272 and not a 312. This conclusion is backed up with the discovery of casting of "DIF" (Dearborn Industrial Foundary) in approximately the same place- according to the website provided by "George" 312's were never reported to be cast at Dearborn.
