Have 428-C6-3.50 rear end, with points, single diaphragm dist., timing set @ 6 degrees, dwell @ 28 degrees as per Ford manual. When I get on it from standing start, or slow roll, it pings, which I get off of it quick.---Now,does this mean the advance is coming in too quick, or too early, or too late. I drove it a short time with vacuum line disconected & pluged from dist.& didn't hear too much of a ping. If I replace the springs in the dist. would they be light, or med to heavy springs. Most of the driving is in the low RPM range [ 2500-- 3000 ]. Appreiciate any help.--Thanks---S.
428 on todays gas..good luck, high compression+ S**T for fuel, you should sell it to me....or maybe have your distributor recurved, or slowdown the advance by adding washers under the sring in the vacuum advance, or relace it with an adjustable one
An adjustable vacuum advance and check to be sure BOTH springs are in place on the mechanical advance.
You would need to stay with med or heavy springs to keep the advance slowed down.
A 428 will run just fine with todays gas and high CR IF, I repeat IF you carefully setup the advance curve in the dizzy. Check the specs in my gallery for my '66 with a 428, runs fine on regular grade fuel unless I am towing.
