How much clutch material (I assume that's what it is) is normal to have in the bottom of the tranny pan? I did a complete fluid change about 8 months ago or so, due to water in the tranny, and added some Lucas tranny additive. It has been doing fine until recently.
When I just dropped the pan again yesterday, there was a pretty good film of black on the bottom. What I'm curious about, is how much is "normal" or right around "normal"?
The problem with water in the pan is it swells the clutches as the water works it's way out of the clutches it causes the the clutch material to turn lose.
That looks like a lot of material but depending on dirty it was the last time you changed it, how hard you work it and how many miles you've got on this change it could be considered normal. 20,000 miles of hard work that looks normal to me.
I wouldn't say it's terribly hard worked.. just a DD, really.
and it wasn't TOO bad the last time I changed it... like I said, about 8 months ago. I wouldn't say it was this dirty, but I don't think it was BLACK either, it was grey'ish in color.
another update... decided to drive my truck into town to pick up the TRS/Neutral Safety Switch.
Something I noticed.... it *looks* like my truck is shifting into 3rd, but is just slipping, so it shifts back down to 2nd. I was goin about 45mph, running at just over 3k RPM.
when I let off the gas, the RPMs seemed to fairly quickly drop down to about 1000, and in about 1-2 second intervals, the RPM would jump to 1500, then back down to 1000, while I was coasting.
Putting it in 2nd gear, it did not do that.
Also, wether or not this is related (probably not), wether in D or 2, when I pushed farther down on the gas pedal, I heard this very high-pitched whine. It was only in a certain section of the throttle.. if I pushed farther down, it went away.. if I let off, it went away.
Gonna go replace the TRS now, and see what happens.
does $1750 sound like a good price for a rebuild? That also includes them pulling and reinstalling the tranny, a shift kit, a new TC, and anything else that needs replaced..
depends on the year of the truck. With most older fords, basically 80's and older, used tranny and install would run around $500-700.... rebuilt gets closer to 900 including install. $1700 I would expect a new engine/tranny. Give the year/model of the truck for a better idea.
it's a 97 5.0 AWD Explorer. Gonna run me $1750 for the rebuild. But that also includes the labor of pulling and reinstalling the tranny. A 1-year unlimited mile warranty, a new torque converter, a shift kit (due to the low pressure in the 4R70W), a hardened intermediate shaft for sure, and anything else that needs replaced.
Sound like a good deal? And the shop is reputable.
Wow, that's much newer than i expected lol....the price sounds right, and they are doing much more work than just the rebuild....make sure you get all the old parts, if not for spares, you can sell em to ppl doing their own rebuilds.
