my 01 supercrew with a 4.6 all of a sudden started stalling then it has very erratic idle it goes way up then way down most of the time stalling. i took it to dealer and they cant figure it out. they say its running lean and are talking to ford to try to figure it out. has anyone dealt with this? only mod is a k+n fipk.
well it took the tech over a day to figure out and it turns out to be the maf. it wouldnt show on the computer it was bad. just found it by process of elimination. he went through the whole engine looking at everything. i am dredding the bill now
All the more why I love my 68 CS with a Holley, one hour rebuild on the bench for $30 including beer. Sorry, try keeping a Rover running without a dealer now that's a test with meters, factory books and alot of patients.

The MAF is probably just dirty - the K&N (if overoiled) coats the MAF with oil.
If the mechanic cleaned it, it's not a big deal, but if he used a brand-new one, it'll cost ya. I'd get the old one back from the mechanic and check if it's dirty. If it is, clean it and keep it for a spare.
I'm running a K&N for 37K miles without any MAF oil problems and Rover's are sensitive to air temperature, humidity or time of day, a PITA vehicle. MAF is dry and clean, this is highway not off road driving, if K&N had problems everyone would of heard of them by now.

Well, everyone knew about it around 1998, when I put mine in... so I knew it was going to do it, and including cleaning (or just checking) the MAF as a standard thing to do when changing the oil. At least, it was a known thing in the MN12 (t-bird/cougar) boards...
Besides, if it wasn't that way from the factory, it's easy to overoil the filter causing the same thing...
