I have a 2002 F150 4.2 L and I am wanting to add a Receiver hitch, instead of putting the strain on my bumper (when I do tow a trailer, which isn't that often, but when I do, it always seems to be a 16 ft double axle one).
I was thinking of putting a class III/IV on, just so if I do tow a bigger trailer, the truck is ready.
A couple of questions:
1) Any recommendations on what brand of receiver hitch; I would prefer it not to obstruct the spare tire, which I heard can happen, sometimes?
2) My truck's GVWR Range: 6000-7000 lbs -- so, if I am correct, that would be the total weight of the trailer, stuff on it, and the truck (and people/stuff in it?)?
I can't give you any recommendations for the hitch, but GVWR is the weight the truck can be alone, including the truck, passengers, cargo, fuel, etc. GCWR is the maximum weight of everything in the truck plus a trailer and all things on it.
Go with the standard Reese hitch. That is what I have on mine and it had no problem with pulling a 10000 pound trailer 400 miles. It completely clears the spare without any problem also.
I bought a draw-tite from the local trailer suplply place, and it was a snapp of a torque wrench to put on, as the holes are all ready there, yea mine is rated I believe 6,000 600lb tongue
