Sound proofing

My 74 F-100 sounds like a tin can inside. I plan to add softer elements to the truck like the Headliner, behind the seat, new carpet, seatcovers etc. In theory this should lessen the echo effect. However everything in the truck seems to be metal. I also thought about putting spray foam insulation in the empty cavaties like the rear door posts. If anybody has any tips let me know. Thanks.

I bought jute padding from JC Whitney, it's jute on one side and aluminum stuff on the other to reflect heat and deaden sound.

I put that stuff under the carpet, in the shift boot and between the door panels and door.

I also went to Home Depot and bought waterproofing asphalt mat, it's about 1/16th thick with an adhesive back, similar to Dynamat but WAY cheaper. I installed this stuff on the outside door skins, under the carpet where the factory stuff had disspeared and between the ribs on the back of the cab.

I can't tell you how much of a difference this made, it's incredible. Though, I'm comparing to driving around with no carpet and rattling door panels. The doors shut like a vault door, no more tinny crappy noise when shutting.

I still need to install jute padding above the headliner and I'll figure out away to put some on the back of the cab. At this point, if I were to do no more I would still be VERY happy.

I've got 3" tailpipes with 40 series flowmasters that exit out behind the back tires and I can carry a conversation with just a slight raised voice at 3000 RPMs and 60 mph.

Sounds like some good ideas, I have 3" tails as well exiting in front of the rear tires, pax side, plus the road noise, you can't carry on a conversation at this point. I'll be looking into your ideas quite seriously!!

I live in az where the heat can really get to you. The previous owner put this insulation type foam under the headliner. It's the same stuff they put under the stucco siding for homes. it comes in sheets and it's about an inch or so thick. It really doesn't do much for road noise but I don't have any vibrations from the roof area and the truck doesn't have a bunch of heat from the roof area. Cuts down on echos alittle. Just an idea.

That foam holds in moisture and over time might cause rust. Just something to think about. I bet some of that spray in bed liner would work. Or you could buy a roll of sound deadner and just stuff it everywhere.

Watch any kind of insulation that will soak up and hold moisture.

moisture

Moisture, I didn't think of that. I hate rust. It makes me want to line the truck with about 20 million of those little silicon packets that you get in shoeboxes. Marine sound proofing insulation may work also. (depending on cost).

I brushed on a petroleum-based water sealer to the insides of my doors, then sprayed in foam over that, and then painted over the foam with more water sealer. I like having a little ballast and sound proofing in the bottoms of the doors.

I put ice and water shield (used under roofing) over my new floor pans, then carpet padding, then carpet.

3M makes a rubberized undercoating (sound deadener) that you can spray on with an inexpensive gun. Works really well for areas inside the door. smells a little till it dries good.
