I'm presently building my 06 Superduty PSD wish list and have a question about the dual-alternators option. The truck will be a commuter/grocery getter a lot of the time but it's also going to pull a small jeep trailer (1500#) & carry a hefty slide-in truck camper needing to charge some battery's on long trips across country and (hopefully) into Mexico, Canada and Alaska on fishing trips and boondocking.
Is the dual alternator a reasonable option? Why is it a good choice or is it just overkill in a truck that is already built Ford Tough. If I may install an electric winch down the road will that effect my decision now about needing the second alternator?
Recalling from other threads it seems as if 1 is plenty unless its used for Ambulance, tow truck, fire support vehicle,etc....
Search it and i'm sure you'll find a few threads on it.
On another site a chap pointed out that the 140 Amp heavy alternator that comes with the Snow Plow package is plenty ample for almost all applications (including winches) except emergengy vehicles. The added benifit is, it is a cheaper package application than dual alternators and it beef's up the front end to handle a nice heavy bumper and winch down the road.
