I think i have a gas tank that is leaking. Just noticed a gas smell in the garage. After checking all obvious area's,i deduced its the truck. Is there a good, safe, easy way to find out where it is coming from? (bottom of truck is always wet, winter in Wi.) I'ver heard of the tank hangers wearing thru the tank. What is a good replacement? any recomendations?

Thanks
Is it the rear tank? If so, check the rubber stopper vapor hook up line that goes into the top of the tank. The rubber shrinks over time and allows gas to pour out if the tank is filled.
If it turns out to be the tank, check out JC Whitney.
It's the rear tank, seems to be coming from the front, center area. Possibly the seam? Havn't been able to really crawl under it yet. Are the tanks easy to replace yourself? Does anything else need to be redone while your under there?
Thanks
Mag ,
If its leaking , park it outside . If you have some form of ignition inside your garage like a water heater etc , it wouldnt take a lot of gas fumes to cause a real fire hazard .

If it is your rear tank it may be underneath the internal fuel pickup/filter. This happened on my 90. I came out one morning and found a puddle on the driveway underneath the spare. I dropped the spare and found that the tank had rusted through right in the center(lowest point). Once I drained the tank (lot of work, it was 3/4 full)I dropped it and removed the fuel pickup and noticed rust on the filter and that the filter sits right on the bottom of the tank. Don't know exactly where the moisture came from(it's my daily driver so it doesn't sit). To make a long post short you might want to check that. I luckily got a radiator shop to weld mine up that same day. The even picked up and delivered.

If you find yourself needing a tank National Automotive Lines, Inc will have an exact replacement tank to fit your truck. Call 1-800-428-4300. They are in Shelbyville, Indiana. In my 1999 catalog the rear 19 gal. tank is $68.95 plus S&H. The front 19 gal. tank is $75.95 plus S&H. I have used 3 of their tanks and had no problems at all. They also have new exact replacement straps if you need them. Also they have gas tanks for many different vehicles including muscle cars. Get their Free catalog, they have lots of parts. I always had my tanks within 3-4 days when I ordered from them. The tanks are made by American Desingner the same brand tanks they sell in J.C.Whitney. I've yet to see anybody beat their prices on gas tanks. And no I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer!
