I was just wondering how fast my 1982 F100 stepside could go. It has a 300 6 cyl. and a T18 4speed transmission in it, with a 9" rear. The first gear is a granny gear, and has a top speed of 15 mph. (screamin'). The second gear has a top speed of 45 mph. I don't really know the rest, the truck is under restoration. If anyone knows, PLEASE POST!!! i'm dyin' to know !
I have a 82 F-100 with a 300 six with a 3 speed automatic transmission. I haven't pegged it out but I wouldn't get the thing over 75, My truck handle 65 and 70 but I wouldn't want to try anything above that. I hope you can use this info.
I can't tell you for sure, I'd need to know what size tires you have on, and what ratio is in the rear end(lift a rear wheel off the gorund, turn it one full revolution(assuming an open diff.) and count the turns of the driveshaft, then multiply the turns by 2 and you will have a rough estimate of your ratio), I can give you an idea though. I doubt 15 is the top speed in low, I can't find a ratio(ratios for the t-18 aren't easy to find) that supports 15 mph at 4000 rpm unless you have 4.10 or lower gears, which would make your top speed 84 or less. I also have a 82 Flareside, it is set up a little different though, it has 3's in it's 9"and a srod 3 speed with o/d, it will pull 60 in low, 75 in second, and since 3rd doesn't work, and the engine is toast, I have only been able to pull 110 out of it in high(2400 rpm) in theory, it is capable of 164 in high at 4000 rpm, which is the max, anywhere beyond, and the engine falls flat on it's face. I am swapping in another engine and a C6, so I will be cutting my top speed back to 115.
