I just bought a '95 F150. Beautiful truck. Low miles. 4.9 6cyl. Manual. Dual tanks. I think the front tank's pump is out. I checked the relays and I believe all are good. I want to change the fuel pump but don't know if I have the 18 or 17 gal tank. Is there a way to tell the difference between tanks or will I just have to drop the tank and remove the pump to take to the parts store for comparison? Is the front/rear switch more likely the culprit? Thanks. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Check a manual for your make, model, engine and year truck. Or ask on this site if you don't have one and give all the details. I looked after I was done and my manual said 19 gallons (should have done that first, dah!) Here is the story on my 1991. First, the dual switch was bad. I took it apart and cleaned it and the pump started making noise. Problem is it was dry for so long that the pump went bad (or, the pump was bad so the switch got bad from lack of use). It cost me $35 to get a pump from a junk yard. I had the same question as you. So, spur of the moment, I just got a pump for the 16 gallon tank. Of course, it turned out that mine was the 19 gallon (long and narrow under the truck). I disconnected the spout and cut the tank straps with a sawzall because the bolts were so rusted. Then dropped the tank. Put the new pump in. Put new straps and bolts on. Works fine now. Except the gas gauge stays on 5/5 of a tank from 5/8 to empty. Oh well. I think it was a very easy job.
Tanks (get it) every one for your replies. I have the std cab w/ long bed. I am going to monkey with it a bit before I spend the money for a new pump. Just as a test, can I switch the connectors on the switch and put the front wire on the rear switch post and vice versa or will that not make a difference? Is it possible the inertia switch needs to be reset or is there only one switch for both tanks? I need a service manual bad. Thanks again.
