Strange AC behavior

This isnt a real big problem, but it was something a little strange. Yesterday coming home from the lake I turned on the AC (Norm) A few seconds after I turning it on the air stopped blowing from the dash vents. At first I thought I blew a blower fuse, but then I noticed the air was blowing from the defrost vent(s) a few seconds later the air switched again to the heater vent then back to dash vents. For several minutes the air would cycle for a few seconds through all three vent positions untill it finally stoped and ran like normal for the remainder of my trip. I'v never seen this happen before. What would cause this?
