Well, I'm not an expert, but I would guess your cat is just doing what it is supposed to. The cats get super hot to burn up left over noxious gases that are in your exhaust.

It really bothers me when a shop can tell a customer there are "no codes" which leads the customer to believe (because the mechanic is allready convinced)that there is nothing wrong with the engine management system ! Just because the are no fault codes set in memory,(which means if you get a code at all, the component went totally south), doesn't mean that all the components are functioning in the proper parimeter ! An example; oxygen sensors that send information that isn't total won't show up as a code because they are just sending the minumum amount of information. If the oxygen sensor was capable of sending the total signal that the emmisions were rich, and the PCM saw this, then the PCM would set a code if the PCM couldn't adjust fuel mixture to the point where the O2 sensor would send a "normal" signal again. This "out of parimeter" effect can happen to all the sensors. No codes doesn't mean everything is inline! An emmisions test would show what's what. Another thing, new convertors do have to wear in a bit so give it a chance. You might want to look at the exhaust at night time, if you see a cherry red cat and pipes, there is a fuel/ignition problem.
