Arrow Basic question about 460 heads

Hello,
I need some help here. I have a 460 and on the back side of the heads, there is a hole.....This hole connects to the exhaust ports somehow. I know because when I welded up the exhaust, some of the smoke came out of that hole. SO.......My question is this, What is it for? and will it hurt if I plug it off? I assume it is for emmisions of some sort.

The emissions air pump was connected there to provide air for combustion of unburned hydrocarbons (fuel) in the exhaust.

if you don't have or want the AIR pump you can put a soft plug (small freeze plug) in the hole to plug it, or if it happens to be threaded you can swrew a bolt into it, and cut the head off will do the same thing.

Thanks guys! I appreciate it....I'll have to put in some soft plugs....I just wish I had seen the holes before I put the motor in....It would have been so much easier
Oh well, I needed to pull it back out anyway...Day job. Guess I'll be busy next weekend.
