I don't know if rangers have a TV cable, but if they do it could be out of adjustment. Be glad though, my Crown Vic held first up to 30mph one day, skipped second, and went straight to third. I changed the tranny fluid and finally found second in chunks of the bottom of the pan. Been driving it for 30K miles without second, and it's still chugging along.
I wonder if the speed sensor is kaput????. My 94 Taurus acted this way too. A computer scan while driving, caught the speed sensors output hanging up.
I didn't have a CEL, as the speed sensors output hadn't completely failed. It's output was hung up between 30-35 & messed up the trannys up & down shifting around that speed & the cruise would sometimes just drop out with out warning.
I suppose it could also be valvebody or shift solenod problem too.
So if you can get a computer scan, or make loan of a scantool I'll bet it could give some good clues.
My local auto parts stores will loan a scan tool for a refundable deposit.
Just some thoughts for considration. Let us know what you find.
ok so this morning, i went outside to look at the truck. i was going to start it and let it warm up so i could check the tranny fluid and look for leaks. well then i realized that i needed to get tranny fluid cause i didnt have any. so i started driving up the road. since the road was pretty empty, i started to manually shift gears. if you shift manually, first and second work just fine. if you skip drive, and go straight to overdrive from second, it shifts into drive at about 35 and overdrive at about 45-50 and will drive fine from there. if you dont shift manually, first gear will get up to about 5500 rpms before it switches to second at about 35-40 mph.second you can also run up to about 5500 rpms and it wont change into drive or overdrive. i still have reverse to. thats about as specific as i could get the situation, so anyone have any ideas? thanks yall. hey ol yeller see ya at dinner. thanx dad.
Dave/Louis, the speed sensor or VSS is located on the tranny end of the speedo cable, it's the funny-looking thing with an electrical plug hooked to it. They're pretty cheap maybe 20 bucks or so. Unplug the wires and put the leads of a multi-tester to the two terminals (on the VSS). For a good sensor, the resistance should be between 190-250 ohms. I've had a similar problem that comes and goes, where it revs way up in first and just doesn't want to shift to second unless I do it manually, but then it shifts fine into Drive. My O/D hasn't worked since I got the truck, but I've never bothered to trouble-shoot these problems because the tranny's going bye-bye soon anyway.
Hope this helps a little. -TD
