Went to the River this weekend. Besides the usual spitting of coolant when it got on the warm side when towing up a hill, I hear a tone, like a long beep. It seems like it comes on when the temp gauge is at the Almost Red zone and the fan kicks in. It lasts for 10 to about 20 seconds. Seems like its in the dash somewhere but I really cant tell for sure. The truck is stock. Anyone ever heard the tone/noise before??
Nothing on the computer reads as wrong.
My boat/trailer weigh about 6000lbs.
I am taking it in tommorrow or Tuesday with the boat so I can do a TEST DRIVE with the boat in tow to try and duplicate the heating problem.
Just wanted to see if anyone else heard that noise and what it might be.
I was going up a 4,000 ft mountain yesterday in my 04 psd with 1000 lbs of guys and gear on board running the AC at about 60 mph and the huge fan noise came on, AC shut down, dash vents stopped working, fluttering noise from the flaps that divert the air from the floor to dash to defrost. Nothing out of dash on any setting for about a half hour, then fluttering and AC dash vents started working again normally. Engine temp never moved above half way.
I think that my overheat detector was tripped anyway and shut down the AC, but that action confused the flapper/diverters and they got stuck with no dash vent for a while.
The fan did roar for a short time during the climb when the AC went out. Not sure if my event was the same as yours.
JCD--if you're blowing coolant while towing make your stealership check your overflow bottle for CO2--means there's exhaust in it and head gaskets/head is probably gone. Mine would only do it on a really hard pull or with the engine about 3k rpm's sitting in the shop. never would do it at idle. My truck is getting a new left head and new style head gaskets as tech told me these trucks are having this problem LOTS when towing. Ford needs to get this right or they're gonna lose their rears in the "light truck" towing market.
JCD: Make sure the electric fan is kicking in when vehicle heats up. My truck heated up several times on me but only on difficult hills while towing a trailer. The first dealer said it was a defective radiator cap and replaced it. The truck continued to heat up when towing up hill. There was a lose of coolant when it heated up. It wasn't until I took the truck to another dealer that they found the fan wasn't working because it had probably never been connected.
No, I never heard any sounds or beeps. I had the truck on cruise and all of a sudden the cruise kicked out and I checked the temp gauge and it was close to the red.
I heard the long beep that you were talking about just yesterday. I was towing my trailer home from the beach, it almost sounds like the turbo is hitting a harmonic.
And I am having trouble with the overheating as well. It's going in this week. Also, I keep hearing a loud "howling" in the cab. Does anyone know what that is? Is that the an kicking on when the temp goes up?
