Well I actually have a problem.I have 1992 flair side 4x4 single cab w/ a 351.I had the truck die on me the other day and I cant figure out the problem. The fuel pump wont kick in,but I have power to the pump.I turn the pump on with a battery in my shop,so I know the pump is good.I cannot figure this out and I need the truck,as it is my only transportation.(I am having to use my moms car)I checked all the fuses and like I said I have 13.2 volts at the connector to the fuel pump, but not when I plug the connector on the pick-up to it.
Thanks in advance
CHRISTOPHER
I am sorry that my first post is a please help me post
Where are you reading the 13.2 volts? At the connector on top of the tank? you should only have voltage there for 2 seconds after you turn on the ignition switch and after the ignition fires from the distributorwhrn you start and beging to run.
Single fuel tank? No front rear switch?
Have you checked the inertia switch? Passenger right side kick panel - make sure the red button is pushed down - check owners manual if you have it.
You can check the fuel pump relay and wiring by grounding the lower right pin of the VIP test connector (trapezoidal shaped connector inside engine cmpartment driver's side by the hinge) light blue /orange stripe wire with ignition on to make pump run - this will check from power thru the fuel pump relay and inertial switch to pump which you say runs with voltage applied directly. If it runs with this test only the wiring to PCM and PCM are left since this simulates the operation of the PCM.
Good luck.
I tried the above and the pump works fine.I guess it is on the computer side,is there a way to be sure? How often do the computers go bad in these trucks?
Will it run the two seconds after you turn the ignition switch ON? If not suggest disconnecting batttery and then disconnecting 60 pin connector to the computer; inspect for corrosion pushed pins loose securing bolt moisture and other gremlins. Understand some people have had water running down on thei connector and causing intermittent problems. Computer should be in driver side kick panel and connector is accessible from engine compartment at bottom of fender. From what I have read the computers are fairly reliable - not the first place to look.
