2000 F-150, 4x4,5.4
Runs just fine to about 3000 rpm's, then just falls on its face. rpm's won't climb even high enough to shift. If you let off the throttle a little bit, it works just fine. Just no power at WOT. Really agravating when trying to pass someone.
Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? I have had two E350 vans with the 5.4 and both acted like you describe when the fuel filter is getting plugged. My '01 150 4X4 has yet to be caught in that problem.
I just ran into this problem on my '99. Mine wouldn't run when you slammed the throttle, in gear or out. But if I slowly depressed the pedal it would run correctly. I pulled the negative line off of the battery for a while, removed the upper intake and cleaned it and all the ports, especially the EGR. I removed the tubes to and from the DPFE sensor and cleaned them out, also the tubes going to the exhaust. I also replaced the PCV valve and it's hoses. I'm not sure which action fixed it, but one of them did and runs fine and I haven't had the problem since. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the sugestions. I had already tried all of the above. Turned out that I had caved the fuel tank in against the fuel pump pickup, and wasn't getting enough gas to run above 3000 rpm. The truck has a skidplate below the tank, and it had popped back out after the dent, so I couldn't see it. New fuel pump and popping the tank back out cured the problem. I probably didn't need a new pump, but that was my next course of action, and allowed me to see the dent. Thanx for all of the help, though.
