I have a 2000 7.3 and it is leaking coolant from where the pump bolts to the front of the engine could this just be a seal or does it mean the pump has gone south?
The engine is maintaining a normal temp. it just leaks when I shut it off.
I don't know about your pump specifically, but most water pumps have a weephole that will leak when your seals are going bad.
If the leak is coming from there then you may need to replace it. If the leak is not coming from the weephole then you may be able to re-gasket it.
If you replace the gasket it will be the same amount of work to replace the gasket as it would be to install a new pump.
I pulled the water pump on my '96 twice before I realized it was the weephole, with the pulley on I couldn't see it coming out the weep hole and I just thought it needed a new gasket, so I siliconed the crap out of it, only to have it leak TWICE, but I left the pulley off the last time and saw the hole leaking.
so long story short.... pull the pulley off atleast, new pump or just a gasket, it will have to come off either way.
when the coolant leaks from the weep hole, it leaves a tell-tell trail...even after it has dried. look for the evidence, it's easy to see. have a good one !
