i have a 77 f350 with a 330 v8,did a valve job and complete tune up,engine idles fine and cruises fine at highway speeds(60 mph at around 3200 rpm),i just returned from a 3000 mile trip with it,it has a petronix electronic ignition setup.
it misses and hesitates between 1200 and 1800 rpm all the time(really bad),you can move the dizzy shaft back and forth very slightly, could this slight movement be causing this problem?
i use the truck local most of the time and need to fix this nagging problem.
Did your mark fluctuate when you set initial timing? If not, I would move on.
I would be looking at the advance mechanism: they gum up, they wear out. I had a really worn (more than slight, lol) shaft that didn't cause problems unless it was subjected to rapid change in RPMs.
If the dizzy/ignition is up to snuff, move on to the carb. That 1200 to 1800 range is pretty narrow.
i had put on a 500 cfm(2bbl) and now a 350 cfm(2 bbl),both were brand new and it had the same problem, the timing mark was ok and as i revved it up the advance seemed to be working ok.
