F150 overheating

I have a 89 F150 5.0 EFI (Australian version ?)which has an overheating problem. It not so much that the engine or water temp is the problem but the headers glow red after a pretty short time. I've had the computer codes checked out (okay) checked the timing for accuracy and also checked that the computer is advancing it and thats all okay. So its either running real lean or the advance/retard has gone wacky. Anyone got any ideas.
