6.0 Question

Hello,

I have always been a chevy guy at heart but here recently I have considered getting a superduty. I am going to start a landscaping company while I finish college, and i need to buy atleast a 3/4 ton truck. When the 6.0 was released I remembered hearing about a problem with the engine, but i can not remember what, maybe with the injectors. I am hoping to get a 2004 f-250 or f-350, but I am not sure about getting that year truck since it was around te time the engine was introduced. Would it be wise to stick with a truck a little older and get teh 7.3? I guess my question is if the origional 6.0 had major problems that i should look out for.

Thanks
Spencer

Hi Spencer Welcome to FTE . The 6.0 did have a hard first couple of years but the 05 's seem to be a good year truck. The 7.3 is the old trustworthy PSD .I've own both and the 05 is a lot better truck than the 01 . Runs better Rides nicer and the tow command system is the best. The 01 with the 7.3 never had a problem with the engine just the tranny but thats a crap shoot in any truck. If you was to buy a 6.0 I would get the 05 or 06 and stay away from the first year 6.0. The 99-03 7.3 is a great truck but at all depends on what you want. If you do go used and get the 6.0 make sure it didn't have a chip or programmer on it.The 6.0 has alot of issues and most of them are with chipped or programmed ones. The other thing to look out for in the 6.0 is oil leaks ,coolant puking and EGR problems. Get a history on the one you want and see if its been to the dealer for any of these problems. Also remember this is where you will hear all the bad about the trucks and not much on the good ones just because it seems like most owners need to vent when things go wrong but don't say anything when they are good ones.

Good luck on getting that new Ford.

So do you believe it would be a wise move to get a 2003 with the 7.3 instead of the newer model with the first of the 6.0s. As much as i would like to have a 2005 it is not going to happen seeing as how i am still in school.

Thanks

I would just stay away from the headache of that first year 6.0 but that doesn't mean that all the 6.0 are bad. If your going to buy used I would stick with the 7.3 its a well proven engine and should have the bugs repaired by now.You can chip or programm a 7.3 with little ill effects.

Good Luck

If you look at vehicles check out the build dates on the engine tag (on the engine) You will notice a pattern here on some of the treads. For the 6.0's I think if the build date was before Mar 04 on the 04 model they had some issues. Might be wrong on the month. If someone would clearify please do.
Depending on what you can afford right now is another story in itself. Our son graduated last spring from college and got a federal job. We went from A-Z on a budget 3 times and this gave him X $ towards a vehicle. We went shopping for a vehicle then he realized that the prices stated on TV didn't include a lot of things. But he did get a nice new vehicle with most of what he wanted. He did find that used was more in payments than new. He stayed in budget and he told me the other day, he was glade we did that. Not much money for anything else. But he knows the bill's can get paid each month. Sorry for the story but it just hits home with what we went thru with our son.
