I have just put a 1984 300-I6 into my 77 F100.I changed the carb and distributer. My problem is now I can't get the timing mark to line up with 6 degreese.I thought i might be out a tooth one way or the other. That made it a lot worse. So I put it back to where it was seems to run real nice. Now why won't these marks line up.And is there a adapter that I can put on my one barrel intake to put a 2bbl carb on.I can't afordd a new intake.Any help please
If your distributor has vacuum advance you have to remove the vacuum line when setting the timing. My first guess is that you used the 77 distributor and carburator. That's what I did when put an 86 engine into my old 79 E150.
If it's electronic ignition I beleive there is an electrical plug some where that needs to be disconnected. I believe my 86 had a connector next to the distributor to unplug.
If it is running at all, I think your distributor/gear is installed fine and you just now need to get the right test setup. The timing mark is hard to see on the 300. Did you clean up the flywheel real good and find a "fine" line. I heard of lots of people trying to shoot the wrong mark. My 95 300 flywheel has a notch on it, and at first I thought that was the timing mark until I cleaned my flywheel real good and found the correct mark.
Thanks you just nailed the problem right on the head for me.I've been using the big notch. In the morning i'll clean up the pulley and find the correct mark. Thanks
Since you have an 84, I was wondering what marks you are using for timing. I have a set of lines on a tab on the pass. side, but can't find any numbers. Is that the one you have been using? If so, which one is 6, or 8 or whatever? Thanks in advance.
