93 f350 4X4, 7.3, e40d. Tranny seems to be acting as weird as it comes. There are three things I think are related, ana maybe causing tranny problems, but im not sure.First, Speedo does not read anything, it moves initially when the ign is turned on, but then nothing at all. Secondlly, the ABS light is always on( w/ ign power) and Third, the overdrive light flashes all the time( w/ ign power).
Could these all be related to the vehicle speed sensor? Thanks in advance.
Have you checked for any codes? Did you check the fluid? Is it full and clean? Are all the wires connected - FIPL, tach sensor, wires on the side of the trans. Are the connections clean? Do a search on TPS which is really the FIPL and you will get info to test it. How many miles on the trans?
There are a few things to try, other than connections etc. There is a speed sensor at the top of the diff, if that is gone it will cause the o/d lite to flash, the trans to shift very hard. On the abs lite, count the # of times it flashes, it will flash then stay on for a few seconds and start flashing again, that will give you the code. It normally is 15 and that is a memory failure. Look to see if you have brake lites, if you do not check the fuse, the brake lite switch and the switch on the master cylinder. Is your cruise working ?. All the previous are related. Found out the hard way, just went thro the abs flashing - was the brake lite switch. Hope this helps.
Tranny has 70-75xxx miles on it, fluid looks good, dosent smell burnt, and all connections from tranny look good. FIPL wires are good. Tach works great so I assume tach sensor wires are good. All fuses are good, and I do have brake lights. Im going to check if the abs light flashes, but im almost sure that it stays on the entire time.
Im going to replace the speed sensor because the OD light for sure is always flashing.
To describe the action of the tranny a little more, it seems to shift into three gears, but not OD. When i floor it there seeems to be a period were the truck revs freely but then the tranny engages and everything is fine. If i shift manually it is okay, but sometimes it shifts weirdly, like it dosent know what gear to shift into, when i leave it in drive.
I havent checked for codes, im not sure how to. Im going to purchase a ford scan tool from NAPA, to ge tthe codes. Is there a way using a jumper wire or something, Ive heard of this but I am having trouble finding info on it.
