460 rebuild?
I recently bought an 89 f250. It has 150000 miles on the 460. I had a local shop do a compreshion test on it. They said 160 on each cylinder. Can you tell if an engine needs rebuilding by what the compreshion is? Just wondering what kind of condition it could be in, or when I might possibly need to have it rebuilt.

I wouldn't touch it. Just keep the oil changed and keep it tuned. Its good for a lot more miles. I tore mine down at 170,000 because I was doing some mods and you couldn't tell the old rings from the new ones. About the only thing that wears is the timing chain. These engines are beasts and will run virtually forever.

I guess the only other thing I would check is put a mechanical oil preasure gauge in it, and check both cold, adn hot oil preasure, if it drops real bad when hot it may need main bearings, but if the oil preasure is good, and the compression is that good I wouldn't touch it either.
