i finally got the pump and all the lines on today but,the pump makes a whining noise(either the pump is going bad or the bearings are noisy). well i noticed if i let it cool the noise is gone. so i started it up and drove it till the noise came back. when it came back i popped the hood and ran water over the ps cooler for about 3mins and suddenly the noise is gone. after doing this several times i have concluded that the pump is getting too hot. has anyone experianced this? any info would be greatly appreciated
A pump that is close to being totally worn out will do the same thing. As the fluid temperature rises it becomes more susceptible to cavitation and aeration. running water over the pump body cools the fluid. A short term solution is a fluid cooler but in reality the pump is gone. Whenever you replace a PS component, even a hose remember you must install a return line filter. Most people don't and then wonder why their PS pump starts howling later...
Use the following:
Wix transmission/PS filter
===================
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
Ford filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles
i used standard stp power steering fluid. when i bought it i was told the pump was new(wasnt installed) but there was no box or anything like that. i did that as a test simply because it was so hot. i installed a fiter before i ran the system. ive tried that lucas power steering additive and i even put a tea spoon of oil in it but it didnt help.
The pump may have been "rebuilt" by a "painter". In other words; take some old pump, clean, it, paint it, put in box. This is unfortunately common. Get another pump.
yea i realize that,for now ill leave it be. i dont drive it that much right now and im trying to get other things fixed first. i still need to jet the carb,fix the turn signals,fix the leaking ram,r&r the rear brake pads and e-brake cables and a few other little things
