Is there? or isn't there?

I've been having an argument with my friend over the gaskets between the master cylinder and vacuum booster. My setup had four to five metal shim style gaskets. My friends says to throw them away, that master cylinders and boosters don't have a gasket there that the master cylinder simply bolts up flush to the booster. Is there a gasket that goes between them? and what is it there for?

First of all, if a company manufactures a part, there must be a use for them so don't throw out yet. Your friend is wrong ( Duh). Anyway, some manufacturers and rebuilders tossed then in with both boosters and M/C as well as kits. Sometimes the M/C was sold with no rod or a rod that was a tad to long or at the end of the adjustment, so.......to keep some boneheads from grinding the rod, the instruction sheet tells to add the shims as required.
One rebuilder added the shim kit when using a non-original rod with a rebuilt M/C. Some are needed if the booster and the M/C come from different suppliers. ( If the rod is too tight , there would be a vacuum loss) so again, there is a use for them. There should be a thin foam gasket the keep water and oils out of the rubber diaphram inside the booster.

El Cabron, I didn't see a foam gasket on mine but they definitely had a lot of brown crude on them. Basically had to sand it off. I had a hunch the shims where for the clearance of the rod. I'll put them in to be safe.

Gavin, I hate to disagree but I offer as an exception to your comment the stuff on the Home Shopping Channel.

George, You are correct on that one. Although, it does keep UPS busy and keeps the homebound shopping trolls off the streets. .
Imlow, Not must use, Use as needed. Use only as many as needed to so there is no slop.
