First trip

Had a chance to get out of town for a couple days. I took my 2 quads on a trailer. The quads weigh 1100 pounds and the trailer about 600. So 1700 pounds. What I didn't expect was all the downshifting that the truck had to do. My 99 would only downshift 3 times on the route I took (solo). The 05 shifted like I was towing 7000 pounds with the 99! Certainly did not feel like 362 ponies. I'm sure the issue is the 33" stock tires and the 4.10 gears. My MPG was 9.2. Yes there were many 6% grades. When I start towing my 7000 pound trailer I'm afraid that I'll be pedal to the floor, screaming all the time. 4.30 gears or even 4.56 gears would be much better.

V10 Man, I am sorry that your truck didn't meet your towing expectations and I think Ford should have offered the 4.56 with the 33.2" wheels you get with the 18 inch rims.
Using Randy's Ring & Pinion calculator shows the 4.10s at 60 MPH in OD are having the motor turn 1743 and 4.30s would only have the motor turn 85 RPM faster at 1828.
4.56s would make the motor turn at 1938
Now just by going to a 65 series tire (now available) you have almost the identical RPM as 4.30s and that is what I will do when I get my next 5th wheel.

Having said all this I am surprized your truck felt a light load . I have not towed heavy yet but my utility trailer is 1200 pounds empty and I have hauled a few light loads in the trailer and I could not feel it but I was not on 6% grades either. In a couple weeks I have a business trip to do with my slide-in camper and I will be around 11000 pounds just under my 11200 GVW. I have done this same trip over the years with my last 3 diesel trucks so it will be a good test for my V10. Take care and hopefully your V10 will get more power as she breaks in more . Well sir you are suffering two uncontrollable conditions, First is the new truck is still tight. The 4x4 and all the associated power-train components take well over 10,000 miles to fully loosen up.. But more importantly you live in Mesa Arizona.... Why is that a factor?

Because your state succumbed to a bunch of California nut cases and adopted some junk science crapolla about oxygenated fuels being better for the environment. OK may be they are better in a smog laden city. But for country fellers that need all the power possible the blend is no good! By definition these motors are cleaner when they are not crippled by a funky burning blend of crap the computer is not programed for.

Next time at the pump read that little sticker that describes the "blend" and what months it is at 10% and 5%.

I travel from Central Texas to Cochise county, (Sierra Vista/Ft Huachuca) and Tucson a lot. Every trip requires me to get local fuel and it always drops my power WAY down until I get back to New Mexico and get REAL gasoline again.

Another modest power dropper is you altitude. I must say that my new 3v V10 is not as sensitive to high altitudes as my 2001 2 v version was.

I already have had the pleasure of a trip out and back up over two of the tallest passes in America (Loveland and Vail pass) both over 11 thousand feet. Yes, my power dropped off, but the new motor is by far the BEST one I have ever driven over those passes....including my 7.3L PSD.

Did us use the tow/haul mode? How about the ITBC? On the next trip try disconnecting the battery the night before and reconnect just before the trip with Tow/Haul engaged and see if the new re-learned program is not more to your liking.

I am absolutely amazed at the heavy weight capabilities of my 05 towing machine!

1700 miles. I'm not really complaining, well sorta, but I knew going with the 4.10 wasn't the best and I figured 4.10-4.30 dam close enough for me. I think I'll keep it anyway....

I just towed 6500lbs with my V10/6spd/4.10 equipped F250, and couldnt have asked for better results, I was constantly looking at the speedo to see that my speed had crept up to past 80mph, granted I am in the flatlands of IL. For the loads you are towing, the difference between 4.10s and 4.30s is going to be nothing. Im sure that more break in time will result in a much better result when towing.
