Rear Brake Lights Replacement

Is it just me or does it seem that on the Aero I'm always replacing the rear brake lights?

The lights on the right and left not the hi-mount light I just replaced those bulbs this year and they were stock they lasted a good long time so everythings good there.

Does anyone else have this problem?

It seems like I'm buying 3 to 5 bulbs a year.

It not costly just annoying when all my other older cars are running on their stock bulbs and some I have only replaced once.

Is it because I'm buying the bulbs at Auto Zone and they sell cheap bulbs?

I am thinking of replacing them with LED lights so I don't have to worry about them again are there any sites that sell the LEDs (3357's) with the socket so they just plug in to the stock socket?

Also if anyone has used these leave your opinions here .

This is not common. I have only replaced one or two bulbs in 13 years of operation. I suspect you have a bad ground. If you live in snow country, "slush-bergs" can encase the wiring harness along the rear bumper and pull/stretch the tail light wiring to point of breaking. One year I had a big slush-berg and stupidly kicked at it trying to dislodge it. Afterwards I discovered the berg was hanging from the wiring leads and its weight and my kicking stretched and broke them. (Some rear flaps helped this greatly.)

I agree with the bad ground suggestion...

Not a good idea kicking the car, Aerocolorado Let me tell you a little story a few years back. My boss and I had to visit some company up north in the winter, and our rental car's doors seemed to be frozen shut after the meeting was over. My boss kicked the car's doors a couple of times while I went inside to make a call to Avis. Well, guess what! I got out of the building and my boss was waiting for me at the front door, very nervous, with the car running. He told me to "get in the car quick" because he had been "kicking the wrong car." Moral of the story: "make sure you're kicking the right car!"

I have problems if I don't replace both bulbs at the same time with a matched pair. Ditto with the E-350 I had.

All,

I don't know the root cause of the issue some are seeing, but don't think it's common. Of my two A*s, I've only replaced one brake bulb in 15 "vehicle years" and 450K miles.

Forgot to say there are two grades of bulbs, you maybe better off switching to a Heavy Duty Bulb. Slyvania has the HD ones.

Just out of curiousity, are you touching the bulbs with your bare fingers? If so that is what is causing your bulb delema. Your finger grease really shortens the life of bulbs.

If not, then it is the wireing.

Finger grease is more of a problem on high energy bulbs like headlamps...

It never hurts to handle bulbs with a tissue or towel to keep them virgin clean

Thank you for all your input.

I thought only halogen bulbs should be kept free of grease?

All halogens I've bought for my worklamps and head lamps have had the skin
grease warning on the package and no incandescents did.

Guess it doesn't hurt to give these bulbs the same care though.

Maybe its because of all the bumpy roads I travel down?

I'm going to replace both with those Heavy Duty Sylvanias Aftrmidnite was
talking about and check the wiring and I'll handle them with a tissue.

Also I read on a halogen bulb package for your information if you do get grease on a halogen bulb to remove it simply use some isoprophyl (rubbing) alcohol about $1 at your local pharmacy on the bulb and wipe clean that will get rid of the skin grease .

You could also have a crack in the lens or around it. When it rains or you wash the car it will let water get in. Then when the blub gets hot......

All,

Hey! I started thinking that maybe this would be a good time to try the new LED replacements.... Anybody try 'em yet?
