I Have A 87 6.9 That Runs Perfect 2 New Batteries And Every Once In A While I Go To Start It And The Starter Starts To To But Then Motor Locks Up Wait A Minute Hit The Starter Again On Off On Off Then It Will Finaly Go . All Injecters Checked Out Cleaned Cdr Any Ideas Would Be Great OH YA STARTER IS NEW TO
Might want to pull the glowplugs and have someone crank it for you and see if you can figure out which cylinder has the problem. I was thinking head gaskets, so I hate to think about a 6.9 getting a pinhole.
When I Had The Motor Out To Replace Head Gaskets Had The Block Check By Shop Said It Looked Good But I Did Find That The Block Has A Small Crack Buy The Block Heater Looses A Very Small Amont Of Water Would That Cause My Problem .
did you look into the radiator to see if it is using water? Try removing all the glow plugs and have someone crank the engine over for you after it sits for some time. You may have to do this a couple times to see if it is in fact taking water into a cylinder. When it starts, does the white smoke smell like anti freeze??
I have an 84 and I had a pin hole (cavitation). I found it just like they said pull glow plugs and crank er over. Also I checked with a diesel speciality shop and they said that the only cylinder they ever see make it all the way through is the back cylinder driver side and the hole will be half way down toward the cam exactly where mine was. Its not common on A 6.9, thicker liners but I can tell you it happens. If it is a hole, a machine shop can sleeve it. good luck.
