Just trying to get an idea from others what they think is a good deal on a new '05 F-150 FX4 that stickers @ $36,500... My dealer is offering $21,500 with a $7500 trade for my current truck (2000 Silverado 4x4 4.8, 110K, shortbed, reg cab, base model).
Is this good or is there room for more of a discount?

From the looks of things, sounds like I've negeotiated a decent deal. The only question is... will I experience the issues that some of the '04 / '05 owners are experiencing? Have those issues been corrected by now? Should I look for a specific build date?
When I bought my truck a month ago I called just about every dealer within 200 miles. I found one in FL that was willing to go $500 below invoice before rebates and no dealer fees. The ended up bringing the truck I wanted in from another dealership (who wouldn't go below invoice). I happily paid the $150 charge to transfer it. They even offered to deliver it to my door for $275!
Point it, call around. If you have a fax modem, cut and paste the fax numbers from the ford website and Fax the specs of the truck you want out to every dealership and let them bid. I suggest requiring them to email you. Fax Attack baby!
If there is a dealer you prefer to work with, just get the best price and ask them to match. You should be willing to pay a little extra to stay local and have good relationship. My biggest frustration now is that my local dealership is a little bitter with me that I didn't buy the truck from them but want them to do all the warranty repairs....
If you plan on keeping the truck for a while, you should check out those dealers with 04s sitting on their lots. Those trucks are doing nothing but costing them more money everyday, so they are a lot more willing to work with you. I got my 04 FX4 for about $1000 below invoice before the rebates. I think I probably still could have done better than that, but I only went to one dealer.
Even still, I went to Ford.com and requested a dealer quote, and one dealer actually offered me below invoice on an 05! It was still about $2000 more than what I paid for the 04. It had leather and a few other features I didnt care to throw the extra money down on. Remember that most of these dealers, even selling at invoice are still making money on the deal, whether it be your trade-in or dealer kick backs. Just be sure you shop around (I suggest online). CarsDirect.com is a good benchmark site.
