I have a 1990 F150 4.9L 4x4 5 speed. When I bought the truck the air conditioner blew out nice cold air for the last few months of summer. If my memory serves me right I went off-roading at the end of the summer and ever since then my air has not been cold. I think what happened is the air stopped blowing out cold but it was to the point of the year that I really didnt have to have A/C so I just forgot about it. Now that it is blistering hot I really need it. The heat worked great all winter except for this horrible deep noise that would randomly come and go whenever the heat was on. I do not know if this has anything to do with the A/C or not but if someone has an answer to my question about 1) the A/c or 2) the horrible deep rumble when I turn on my heat that would be great. Someone told me to check the fuse under the hood but I do not know where it is and I do not have a Haynes manual. I would really love to have cold air again.
Well, first off I would check your freon charge. It could be a number of different things that are causing it to blow hot. I just know the basics of A/C so I really can not help too much there. I know that the squirl cage in the blower motor can get caught up with debris so I would check it and clean it out if needed. That could be the noise you hear when the heat is on.
First you need to check if the clutch is engaging on the compressor. Turn on the air and look under the hood at the air cond. compressor and see if the clutch is engaged. When you heard the rumble with the heat on did you have the heat selector on floor or on defrost? If it was on mix or defrost you may have been hearing the air compressor groaning. Usually the clutch will not engage if the freon is low but someone may have bypassed the switch and if the compressor runs with a low charge you could damage the compressor. Check this and post the results. Good Luck
no the clutch is not engaging on the compressor. When I had the heat on during the winter it would groan in both the defrost and floor and when I had it on the upper vents. I just went out and put it on defrost and heat and I could not get it to make the sound and the clutch never engaged. It sounds like it might be low on freon from what people are telling me.
