I have pinking problem with my Ranger 99 with a 4.0L engine. The problem can be partcially solve by running the engine whit premium gaz (highest octane gaz ). Last time I changed the spark plug on it, the spark plung on one engine was in a very bad shape. They was lot of black dust on it. After I had change all spark plug, during one or two weeks the pinking problem there was solve. Is it possible the pinking problem come from spark plug in bad shape? What is this black dust on spark plug and where it come from?
The platinum tipped plugs that Ford has been using are scheduled for replacement at 100,000 miles. How many miles did you have on yours and did they all look the same when you pulled them? Black, sooty deposits indicate running rich.
Pinking (ummmm, it's commonly called pinging or engine knock) on the 4.0 is typically caused by three things and listed in no particular order:
*dirty MAF sensor
*loose lower intake manifold bolts
*engine needs to be decarboned
All of these issues are fairly simple and very inexpensive/no cost to address and have been discussed in here before. If you need details on how to address them, just hollar and I/we will be glad to help.
I would like to know if it possible to clean the MAF sensor or if the only way is to replace it? If it possible to clean it, what can I use to clean it?
