My dad just bought a new 2004 F150 Screw Lariat in February. This is to replace his aged but trusty '74 F100 that he bought new. Imagine the look on the salesman's face after he asked dad about his trade-in. Anyways he's only put about 700 miles on it. He's noticed that it doesn't "gear back" until he's about two miles down the road. I don't know if this is the final shift into overdrive or the convertor locking up. But it takes a while. I was wondering if anybody else's does this. This is the first shift of the day. Otherwise it's fine. Thanks!
The trans has to warm up before it goes into overdrive and that about right two miles
or less my 97ford did it and 03 and my 04 But if you don't think its right take it back
and have them check it out your out no money
My last 5 or 6 vehicles do the same thing (different brands, different countries) and they do not shift into the highest gear until they reach near normal operating temperatures. I was told that this was due to emission standard requirements. They also shift into overdrive around 45 MPH or higher.
From talking to the trans mechanic at the dealer, he stated that when cold the torque converter will not lock up. The fluid needs to reach a certain temperature before it will lock. That is why the trans sort of feels like a 5 speed. You get 1-3, then the overdrive, then the torque converter locks. You will notice that when driving in overdrive with the torque converter unlocked, giving it a little gas will show on the tach immediately. When locked, it only shows when the speed increases. Also when at highway speed, if you give a lttle gas without causing a downshift, you will see the tach move up about 500 rpm when the torque converter unlocks. It will go much higher when it shifts to 3rd.
Thanks Guys! I'll let dad know. So far everything has been perfect. Just kinda wondered about the shifting. This is the first automatic pickup he has had....well it's only the third pickup he's ever had!
