Do the car companies notify vehicle owners of recalls, or are the owners suppose to hear about recalls from the media?

You should get the notice if you're the owner of record. That's why it's a good idea, especially if you buy the vehicle used, to register yourself with the manufacturer. In most cases this can be done online.

I pretty much expect to hear about recalls and defects on every new vehicle put out no matter who the OEM is because of model development and cycle times constraints. The only difference is the out of the country brands are not reported on as much as Detroit when it comes to short comings. Why? Advertising dollars and bias.
