I haven't called shotgun in years. I think it stopped when I reached drinking age. See, the rule was if you were drinking from an open container, you sat in the back no matter what. And there had to be a front passenger to avoid being a heat score. So the last one to pop a top sat in the front, but had to "shotgun" the beer before the door closed.
The driver never drank. Just us drunks in the back seat.
I am almost always the one driving, even if it isnt my vehicle people just like me to drive. Dont know why.<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxdm006BQUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_12_10.gif' alt='I Dunno' border=0></a>
I would say the first set of rules pretty much somes it up. Although in the pickup riding in the middle of the bench is called "Riding B!@$H" where the driver - generally always me - may have to fondle whoever is in the b#$@h seat in order to operate the vehicle properly. Never a problem if said rider is ( how you say ) F.I.N.E.
Also, if two people are to call shotgun at the same time the dispute is settle by a match of rock-paper-scissors unless shotgun is called as so: "SHOTGUN! No rock-picks" In which case shotgun is given to whomever called shotgun with no rock-picks over the sour loser who will inevitable become my... ahem... b@#$h.
Now, in the Bronco you have a couple of other options. This was decided when in high school cruising in my buddies LTD Convertible. Front seat is always: driver-beyach-shotgun, Now backseat is kinda special - say you are the only one in the back and you are layed kick back, feet up on the side with a guitar in your hand - that is riding Elvis...
Nothing more stylish that riding elvis in a cadillac convertible. Or a mudded out Bronco.... ; )

That's another good point. Where did "shotgun" come from? That's the best explanation I've ever heard. Anyone else ever do it like that? I guess, if you're allowed, or were allowed to have open containers?
Shot gun was a turm that was derived from the old west stage
coach drivers. You had the handler/driver and then you had the
passenger that carried a rifle to ward off injuns bad guys and such
So while this is a watered down definition it comes down to the
driver and the shotgun rider next to the driver.
