Post T/C Rattle

Hi Guys,

Took the truck into the dealer for a oil change and I was told they can hear a rattle in the torque converter, my hearing isn't as good as it used to be but I don't hear anything unusual. The truck has 92,000 miles on it and the tranny was serviced at 80,000, the tranny shifts like new. they said the noise could or will get louder and possiblity blow the converter, and from what I've read on this site that would take the tranny out. They say it'll cost about $950 to replace the converter. Any suggestions, go for a stock replacement or shop around for something better?

Thanks

Well, I'm a stick shift driver myself because I don't want to experience what you are going through right now. I have read here and on thedieselsite about several different VERY HEAVY duty torque converters that are available for your truck that would do a much better job. I have also read about many trucks sounding like a can full of ball bearings for 50,000 miles and no harm done due to a double plated clutch inside the torque converter. I would take the dealers advice with a grain of salt. Do some research before you decide you really need to replace the torque converter. Maybe call BTS or Suncoast and get some advice.

Yeah - take it somewhere else.

Besides that, two thoughts:

First - IF it is rattling, there is a very good chance that it is the flexplate, NOT the converter. You need a reputable repair shop to find out. Most stealerships will charge you for a new torque converter, then tell you "oh, yeah, you needed a new flex plate, too."

My brother has three powerstrokes. In the past year, he has had to replace two flexplates. One had 240,000 on it, the other had 150,000.

Still, I'm not saying it can't be the torque converter. So, the second thought...

If it is the converter, buy a better one than stock. The stock one is just okay. More knowlegable people on this forum can make some suggestions.

the noise would be described as a metal to metal scrapping noise .it is a common problem for the converter to make this noise. i have done a huge amount of convert replacements in the dealership. so the dealer isnt trying to pull a fast one.if the noise isnt bothering you dont fix it.

Mine began rattling at around 90,000. I'm up to 160,000 and it's in the shop as we speak getting an ATS Trans w/ Trans Command and Triple Lok converter. I'll pick it up in an hour. As time went on, it did get louder....marbles in a coffee can sound. I don't know how much longer past 70,000 miles it would have gone but the temps were hitting 230*+......SCARRY!!! I'm looking forward to not hearing that obnoxious rattling.

This is probably your answer. The '99's (don't know if all had it) have a double plated clutch which makes a lot more noise than a single plate, which is in all the other trucks. I've had my truck for 50k miles with it sounding like that and haven't had any problems... yet. And I know it sounded like that before I got it, since I bought it from a previous boss.
I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you didn't notice anything different. But upgrading is never a bad thing..

Thanks Guys,

Sorry I'm late getting back to you, the rattle they told me about wasn't on the invoice when I picked the truck up, the results of the Multi Point Inspection was "the vehicle is in good condition".

I know a good place to have it looked at.

Thanks Again, Walt
