My wife's '96 Bronco needs shocks. 110,000 miles! Mostly (90%) street/highway driving. Any "off road" would be Nat'l Forrest gravel. She likes it to ride like a Crown Victoria. Am I gonna go too wrong with the $20.00 Monroe's? Or what else is out there that fits here specs? Midas?
Hey guys, I'm running monroes on my 92 truck hate them had them on since last July and they are bad if it wasn't for the lifetime warrenty, Look into KYBs if they make truck shocks.
Just ordered 6 ProComp ES9000 for my '92. Had them on my Land Rover 90 before that and they rock. The Ranchos that are on it at the moment are totally nackered and did't look as strong as the ProComps. I know loads of other people who use ES9000s on their off-road trucks and swear by them.
you will hear a lot of people say the monroes are complete crap. Rancho shocks are good along with edelbrock.
Rancho are made by Monroe, and most people I know who put them on their Bronco/F-series love them.
Dont like the Pro Comp at all.....never had a set on, but just way too many neg reviews.
If you want to get a VERY high quality set of shocks go with Bilstein......they are a bit high priced, but their performance and longevity can not be disputed.
I just (well like three months ago) a full set of six Rancho RS9000's with the 9 position adjustable dampening. Prior to them I had a set of Rancho RS5000's and they were good shocks and are still good (no leaks or pitting on the shaft and dampening is still fine), but just way too stiff for my needs.
The RS9000 have a 9 position adjustment on them to dial them in for load or road conditions........most times I keep the rears set to the softest #1 position, and the front at position #2.
On another note, quite a few people with big Broncos with the quad front set up just remove one from each side and keep the truck with 4 shocks. IIRC the one they omit is the aft of the front axle shock. Its said that this will give more articulation, and a softer ride?????
In the UK the procomps seem quite popular as are the Delphi DeCarbons. I guess a lot of it is what retails in each country as Ranchos are quite rare here. We have Bilstiens too plus monroes (OEM on most vehicles). Maybe I was just unlucky that the ranchos on my truck were nackered when I got it and wasn't impressed with the build. Also Procomps will be much cheaper than Ranchos in the UK.
The Decarbons I had burst after about 10k miles which isn't good - ok they were used off road a lot but not as extreme as I would have expected them to last.
What have you heard negative about the procomps?
Also whats the consensus on Shock Boots? I had them on the landy (ES9000) but when servicing the shocks I found the boots full of mud which as well as causing corrosion meant the compacted mud reduced the articulation. I have tried them without and they seem to solve this (if not as pretty!)
The Monroes I had on the truck originally were totally shot and I broke an eye of one rear when crawling up a nastly rocky track.
With the Land Rover not having antiroll bars it helped having stiffer shocks for on road use.
I just put some Bilsteins on my F150, and it improved the ride and handling greatly. I would assume that it would do such for the Bronco as well. They were about 65 a piece.
I just installed 6 Edelbrocks and love them. Improved ride greatly. I would say they are valved mainly for street. I dont offroad much so they fit the bill perfectly. They are probably the most expensive however. I have heard only good things about Bilstein shocks but havent tried them myself.
The Rancho RS5000's are much stiffer than stock. It seems like I can feel each and every bump on the road after installing them. But then again...it's a big 'ol 4wd truck and I like it like that!
Well, I put 6 Edelbrock's on my Bronco 3 years ago, and within 3 months, 3 were shot. 2 froze up, and the 3rd leaked all the fluid out. I had them replaced under warranty, with additional cost to me, and now, most of the 6 are bad again. I'm half tempted to just toss them and get some Bilstein's, or ProComps.
