Just finished a complet rebuild of my 70 390 including a master kit and ungodly amounts of machine work. Everything runs great Except if I let it sit for more than a couple of days one of the lifters will leak down, and start to clater. When I start it up and let it run it will go away in a few minutes, but its pissing me off. Any Idea's
I went thru the same thing when I changed cam and lifters, sounded like a beater chebby on start up from day one. At 3K miles changed intakes, while inside removed each lifter, cleaned put back in the same hole. These were Crane Anti-Pump Ups, one had a metal sliver, the offending lifter, others small glitter flakes but not in all of them. Cranes assembly cleanliness? After a quiet motor on start ups. I would locate the lifter and try to remove it without lifting the intake, disassemble clean it. Do it in a clean container to find debris.

Iron stated one lifter not sixteen, this isn't a filter anti-drain problem or no oil pressure. Clacks for minutes one lifter isn't lack of oil pressure unless all 16 clack, by then cam lobes, bearings and cylinder walls are damaged.

take it easy, i know what a lifter sounds like and i know how they act when ones weak or not getting oil properly. in addition to fixing the lifter or replacing it, which it does sound like it needs, this is a good thing to add to prolong the life of the engine. it takes less time to get oil to the places that need it. lay off the caffeine some.
Steve, I didn't mean it to sound harsh sorry. No coffee used but it's Beringer's
C******nay and cheese time in "Kalifornia" I looked at a friends 64 Mercedes diesel that he purchased last year. After checking oil level, adding fresh battery it started. I was under the hood, asked if he had oil pressure after it got started, was running 8 seconds tops at around 1,500 rpm's "BANG" rod thru the block. It had a broken oil pump, thats why so cheap. Oil pressure must be more critical in diesels with higher bearing loads. I installed a pre-oiler on the Rover due to their 6-10 second dry starts and wasted motor.

i was just adding the oil filter thing to help protect dry startups. if he doesnt have the money to fix the lifter right now that would lessen the time the lifter was tapping. by a small amount , but some none the less. hate to hear bout the motor, a diesel does have a bigger bang, no pun intended. by the way im transplanted here from sacramento where my mom and sister still live. wish i had the funds to go visit.

Palau's waters like the survivor show. Find any "shine" down there? Hows the humidity and mosquitos, were starting a bumper crop of them with all this rain.
Old trucks you say, I would like a 48 F-1 complete with flattie. Later.

if your seriously looking for one i can probably find you one. im one of those guys who likes to take time for himself and that to me is scouting for out of the way junk yards and back roads. if i had the money for what i know is laying in yards and on farms i could make a killing without having to go to work.
Over the years looking at streetrods I always found myself looking at 48 F-1's.
A complete original is so sweet. Plan B getting a straight body roller and build a custom. Most customs have original or box tube frames, to me way too heavy. With my aviation background and way of "thinking" (cracks the wife up) is a chromemoly frame, tubbed, 9" independent, torsion bar front independent, stroked 351W. Big meats rear, low profile front, sitting low not slammed. With being flat on my back most the time with back troubles, possible surgery since november i've stopped all projects including the 482" motor build. It would be great to hunt your area and find a treasure but not at this time as I can't predict my financial future, thanks for the offer.
Sorry for the long delay from my last post. Ive been out of town. That yall for your responses, but I think most of my problems go back to the oil pump. At idle(600rpm) its making about 2psi, and about 11psi at 2600rpm. Should I replace it with a high volume, or a high pressure, or a stocker (warranty).
