Im going to be moving into a condo style apartment and I dont want to be a noisy nieghbor or get kick out so im wondering if there any quit air compressors on the market? Or whats the quitest on the market?
Will you have a garage or not? Most of the oil lubricated box store units are all about the same noise wise. Not too noisy to run during normal hours but I wouldn't want to hear it after 9PM or so.
The oil less are very noisy. I wouldn't want to hear this kind anytime!
My Husky compressor isn't as loud as I thought it was once I walk outside the garage, but it still isn't quiet by any means. Space permitting, I would just get the largest tank you can afford so at least the compressor doesn't cut on as much. For example, with my 60 gallon tank, I can get a good 10+ minutes of use out of my air ratchet before the compressor will kick back on.
Stay away from the shaft driven models. I have a Craftsman Pro, oil lubed, twin cylinder 6hp on a 25 gallon tank. (It is the only belt driven portable Craftsman Pro)
I had a vertical tank with a shaft drive for less than half an hour before neighbors 4 houses away came to ask me to turn it off. I traded it for the horizontal belt driven compressor.
It isn't any louder than our washer and dryer.
The key to a quiet compressor is the intake filter.
If it is in a garage. you can build a box of plywood and foam to insulate the sound. I use to make them for the really big dot matrix printers I used at home so they would not drive me crazy.
Building a sound proof enclosure for a compressor is difficult because the enclosure must be well ventilated and any opening lets sound out. A compressor produces a lot of heat and the tank surface must be cool in order to condense moisture out of the air.
The biggest noisemaker on a compressor is the intake filter.

Torque is right! An air compressor generates lots of heat. I was called in on a project after the fact on such a deal way back in 1974. The city of San Diego in an effort to silence their air compressors in a maintenance building basement, sound proofed the room. The office girls in the floor above complained of the noise. They did a great job of soundproofing but theyn didn't realize they also made it air-tight. As the compressors ran and pumped all the ambient air into the receiver the pressure in the room went into a vacuum and in the middle of the day the cieling caved in and with it a desk, file cabinet and a secratery. I'll bet she was surprised!
Industrial air compressors have large bores and run at speeds less than 860 RPM. That keeps them quiet and cooler. Compressors designed for the retail market usually have a smaller bore size and often run at speeds greater than 1200 RPM.
