MY 92 FLARESIDE WITH A 4.9 EFI 300 SIX, MAKES A REAL LOUD KNOCKING NOISE, WHEN FIRST STARTED, IT KNOCKS FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS, THEN IT CLEARS UP.
WHAT IS IT?
What oil filter are you using ? Some cheaper oil filters have poor brainback valves which allows the oil to drain out after the engine has sat for awhile . Does it knock on every start up ? My 300 has done it occasionally for yrs ...its brief and not that noisy . Ford has a TSB on this problem dated Apr 95 ...Tsb number 9588 .

Ok ,
I called over to Ford And to remedy this problem there is a revised part ...an anti drain back valve ..Part No. E4TZ-6890-A . After you get the new valve , Drain the Oil , remove the filter , remove the old drain back vavle , install the new valve and torque to 15 to 35 Ft Lbs . Install a new FL-1A oil filter and refill with oil .Good luck with it .
