When I changed the autolites for motorcraft I noticed that autolites were a little bit shorter than the MC, which is probably why they didn't work for me.
Not meaning to be picking by this, just conclusion from your statement. There's a reason one plug didn't work like the other.
If one plug is shorter than one you've been running (regardless of brand) the two plug numbers are not exactly comparable. The shorter plug would be a colder plug, longer plug hotter.
Just good to campare exact equals and not something compatable.
Many cross references (esp with plugs) will suggest a plug number that will work but just isn't the same.
Also, if you go to a parts counter and order a set of plugs by application, you'll get just that, the oe part number. If last plug put in was a hotter plug, you've now just taken a step backward (cooler).
I agree with Ken that it's best to do a good evaluation and see where you're at before you start any major modifications. You'll most likely spend less money and be happier this way....I'm rebuilding my 73 with a 390 now....I ended up buying some things I didn't need and bought some things that I had to repurchase because I didn't buy the right stuff the first time. I got in too big of a hurry and didn't research properly first and it cost me time and money. With the help of this site and especially the FE engine forum I'm finally on the right track.
The way I do things is in this order (+ -):
1) Engine
2) Transmission
3) Other drive train (if needed)
4) Suspension (lift etc...)
5) Rims and tires
6) Interior
7) Paint and body
