Octane knock
Somtimes "octane knock" is terrible. I've heard it often called "Ford Knock". I don't notice it as bad gas because one day it is fine and the next - on the same tank- it rattles terribly. Of couse it is more likely to happen pulling hills or when towing my 3500# trailer. Especially on hot humid days.
Is there a performace chip that I can install to assist for towing?

I don't know about a chip to fix it, but get a can of throttle body cleaner and clean the MAF sensor. THis is a well known problem with X's. Some other fixes are to tighten the lower intake manifold bolts, decarbon the engine and check for vacuum leaks. But I bet the MAF is the culprit.
