429 or 460

I have recently run across a 1970 F-250 Camper Special. The owner told me it had a 390/c-6 combo, but after further investigating by me, it has either a 429/460. What were the years for these engines? The 4V intake has a "C" casting on it. I have to get the rest of the cast #, and get more info on it. I know the engine was put in because of some makeshift mounts. I have run 460's in the past, but never in an early 70's truck. The engine just looks a little diffrent to be a 460( I know they are the same between the 429/460). If there is any way I could make sure, I would greatly appreciate any information. I will get the rest of the cast numbers and post them, I need to get the one off the block to be for sure. Thank you in advance.

There's really no specific way to tell for certain, because various components may have been swapped. If you can get the casting numbers we can make some semi-educated guesses. The only way to tell for certain is to accurately measure the stroke, or get a look at the casting indicator on the crank. The block casting won't help too much because the 429 was offered through 1973 in passenger cars, so the earlier blocks & the D1VE could be either engine. The later D9TE block, used in 460 pickups, was also used for the 429 medium truck engine.

Early 460s look more like a 429 to an extent IMHO, with the sticker style & the paint color. The intake is different looking as well.l

You could take out a spark plug and cut off a piece of coat hanger. Mark the hanger so that you can measure the distance it travels. Insert it into the cylinder and, carefully, turn the engine by hand and measure the stroke. If the hanger goes down 3.59 inches you have the 429. if it goes down 3.85 inches it is a 460. Be sure you cut the hanger long enough that it can't fall into the cylinder. (Or it might be a real bugger to get out.)

IIRC, blocks for 429 and 460 were the same, the cranks were different, stroke measurement as described would be the way to go. The motor had a code tag attched but that is probably long gone.

pmeisel, your right the blocks were the same (with the exception of the Boss 9, and SCJ blocks are 429), and the heads with the same exceptions are the same castings. intakes if they were 4v could be the same, if it's a 2v, and the origanal intake then it's a 429 (all 460s up until FI used 4bbl carbs)
